U.S. gets tough draw for 2014 World Cup

Posted: Updated:

(RNN) - The U.S. Men's National Team will face three traditionally strong teams in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Landing in Group G, the U.S. will face Portugal, Germany and Ghana. Both Germany and Ghana have beaten the U.S. in previous World Cup matches.

The World Cup draw took place in Brazil on Friday morning, placing 32 teams into eight groups. The top two teams from each group move on to the playoffs.

Brazil is holding the event at 12 venues across the country from June 12 to July 13. According to CNN, an estimated 3.2 billion people watch the World Cup, which is roughly 46 percent of the world's population, making it the most popular sporting event in the world.

Jurgen Klinsmann, the coach for the U.S. team, was on the West Germany team that won the 1990 World Cup. He also coached Germany's national team from 2004 to 2006.

Spain won the last World Cup in South Africa in 2010. The U.S. lost to Ghana in an overtime playoff game during that tournament.

England also received a difficult draw and will face Uruguay, Costa Rica and Italy.
