'Reach for Your Dreamz' this holiday season

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A local entrepreneur took thousands of dollars out of her own pocket to host a holiday event aimed to educate and mentor children in the tri-city area. The party had food, toys and activities for kids and their parents to participate in.

Reach for Your Dreamz is a non-profit organization created two years ago to teach young individuals how to reach their dreams and to empower those who struggle with financial hardship. The founder of the organization, Gwennetta Wright, said this group stemmed from her childhood dream.

"When I was young, I always wanted to own my business," Wright said. "I didn't have a lot of mentors, and I did not have anyone to encourage me with my dream and ambition."

Through hard work and determination, Wright said she now owns three businesses.

"I own Xpert Tax Service, Fashionizta, and now Reach for Your Dreamz," she said. "I've been blessed, and I am a God fearing woman. I believe it is my duty to share some of my blessings with the community."

Wright held a similar event last December to celebrate Christmas with those who were in need. Gwennetta saw about 500 to 1,000 people at the event in 2012, and she said she saw about the same number this year.

"We have enough food and toys for one thousand people at today's event," Wright explained. "It is mainly a mentoring program. We pair mentors with children, and they teach kids about life skills, career development and more."

She says that mentors have to go through a back ground check, and go through series of interviews. She hopes to nurture the organization so that she can hold events for local children at least once a month.

"I haven't received monetary donations for today's event," Wright said. "I paid thousands of dollars out of my own pocket. I'm collecting toy donations for children all year long."

She says that monetary donations are tax deductible.
