PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - The honorable Michael J. Bellamy was appointed by Governor Robert Bentley as a circuit court judge in Russell County.
He will be sworn in Tuesday Dec. 10 as the first African-American to serve in that capacity.
He has served the people of east Alabama for almost 30 years. For 14 of those years he served as a municipal court judge in Phenix City and in 1998 became a district court judge.
He says he is glad the governor chose him based on his qualifications.
"I think that's the important thing that he did it based on my qualifications not my race," he said. "But, I hope it inspires some other young person who very well may be a minority to realize that all things are possible if you prepare yourself."
Judge Bellamy is a native of Phenix City.
He says this is a great opportunity for him to continue serving the community and provide service and leadership.
The swearing in ceremony was at the Central Activity Center in Phenix City.
