Commission created to improve AL veterans services

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A new commission is being formed by executive order of Governor Robert Bentley to study ways to improve services for those Alabama's who have served their country in uniform.

The order creates the Alabama Executive Veterans Network, or AlaVetNet, to "streamline the access of services for military members, veterans and their families in key areas," Gov. Bentley said.

The key areas the governor wants to evaluate and improve are in education, employment, health, homelessness, and legal assistance. The governor said the goal of AlaVetNet is to use existing resources and look for ways to expand services while developing a long-range plan for a single, statewide system to get services to veterans in need.

Serving on the commission as co-chairs will be Alabama Department of Mental Health Commissioner Jim Reddoch and Veterans Affairs Commissioner Retired Rear Admiral Clyde Marsh. Seventeen others from state agencies have also been appointed to serve on the commission.

"Alabama is a strong pro-military state, and it is important to help our military members whenever we can," Governor Robert Bentley said. "Alabama ranks as the third highest state in the nation in the number of people deployed to support the Global War on Terrorism. These brave men and women will return home to their families, and we owe it to them to help ease their return into their communities."

The formal plan is expected to be presented to Governor Bentley by June 30, 2014.
