MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Morgan County deputy jumped into the water to rescue a woman after he saw her vehicle leave the roadway and crash into a small body of water.

Chief Deputy Mike Corley was in the area at the time of the wreck searching for a missing dementia patient.

The wreck happened shortly before 12 p.m. Tuesday on Morris Road in Lacey's Spring.

"I was just comin' down the road, looking for a missing person, and a car had stopped up the road and I just come on up to see what they had stopped for," Corley said.

Corley was able to stay with the woman until rescue crews arrived and were able to pull her from the vehicle.

The woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. Rescue crews were in the water for around 40 minutes until they were able to extract the woman from the car. Rescue workers were checked out and evaluated for hypothermia.

According to deputies, the woman said she was avoiding a deer at the time of the wreck.

Sheriff Ana Franklin said it may have been luck that deputies were in the area searching for the missing man at the time of the accident, but that luck was certainly on the woman's side Tuesday.

"This is one of those things that you are lucky to be there at the time. [Corley] is to be commended for immediately jumping in and trying to get her out of the vehicle and stay with her," Franklin said.
