In Los Angeles County, 18 current or former sheriff's deputies are accused of corruption and civil rights abuses. One of the deputies indicted is James Sexton, who is from Tuscaloosa and the son of former Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Ted Sexton.
The U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California says the indictments involve beatings of jail inmates and visitors, unjustified detentions and a conspiracy to obstruct a federal investigation into jail misconduct.
James Sexton is accused of participating in the conspiracy to obstruct justice, in which officers allegedly tried to silence an informant who was working with the FBI's investigation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says James Sexton is on administrative leave without pay.
Ted Sexton also works in the Los Angles County Sheriff's Department. He left his post as longtime sheriff of Tuscaloosa County earlier this year for the job. A spokesperson says Ted Sexton is still working with the department.
Ted Sexton has not yet responded to requests for a comment. We will update this story with any new information as it comes in.
