Montgomery couple, 9-months pregnant, loses home in fire

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It's a terrifying scene several Montgomery residents have woken up to this month and Sammiria Thorington is no exception. "We lost everything, they lost everything. The smoke was awful. We had just watched the news about an apartment complex catching on fire before going to bed."

Thorington had sympathy for those victims, never dreaming she would be one herself just hours later. "It's still shocking. The only time I can believe it is when I see the damage".

Timing couldn't be worse for Thorington. She and her boyfriend have a small child and their little girl is due in only two weeks. Their apartment current sits boarded up, reportedly with smoke and water damage.

The overwhelming deadline of labor and Christmas is made a little easier to handle with the help of the Red Cross.  "We don't have anywhere to go. They helped us out as much as they can, and we are thankful for that."

The Red Cross can only meet a family's most basic needs for 3-5 days. Typically that adds up to $600-$1000 per family.

The owner of South Court Place on Montgomery's South Court Street confirms Thorington will be able to return to her unit at the end of the week, but she's concerned about the repairs and the impact smoke damage will have on her child and newborn.  "We hope we can salvage some of the things left in there. We haven't been inside [since the fire], it wasn't much. But we are still living." Still, she adds, "It could be worse."

Thankful for another day and each other, the overall impact the fire will have on her family and long-term future remains unclear.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
