Selma residents learn more about the Affordable Care Act

SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

The Affordable Care Act has been the topic of discussion in the media for months and on Wednesday it was the focus of a forum in Dallas County.

An information session was held in Selma at Brown Chapel AME Church bringing out area residents eager to know all they can about the Affordable Care Act, including their healthcare coverage options and how to enroll.

"We want you to understand so that you can take action and make things happen in your communities and for your families," said Dollie Hambrick with Alabama Arise.

The event was the third in a series of workshops Congresswoman Terri Sewell has hosted throughout the 7th Congressional District to help citizens learn the facts and get them signed up. The workshop brought out those directly and indirectly impacted by the changes.

"I have to deal with Obamacare. I have to do everything electronically now. All medical records are electronic. I have to enter everything on my iPad now," said Dr. Timothy Marlow, a local physician.

"I came out to see what I could learn to help others, provide information to others when they ask- those who may need healthcare. We know there's a large need in this area and if there are questions and concerns, I want to be able to answer them," added Joyce O'Neal, a local resident.

That's also what officials tried to do during the workshop, addressing big concerns about those who are unemployed or with low paying jobs.

"We want to make sure that you receive the information that you need to take back to your community and for yourself personally if you do not have insurance. The Affordable Care Act is the law. We are not here to debate it tonight. We're here to explain it and to help you as you navigate through the process," said Melinda Williams with Rep. Sewell's office.

If you missed the workshop, Congresswoman Sewell's office says they will be hosting additional workshops in the new year. Those dates and locations have not yet been announced.
