MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

A man serving a life sentence for robbery has escaped from the Alexander City Community Based Facility, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

John Earl Christian is a minimum-custody inmate allowed to work outside the facility as a van driver transporting inmates to and from work-release locations.

Thursday morning, the Phenix City Police Department reported a van belonging to the facility was found abandoned. The van was empty and the doors were locked. Christian could not be located during a search of the area.

Christian is a white male, six feet tall, 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He has served more than 20 years of his sentence, and was denied parole Wednesday, with a rehearing scheduled in 2018.

The US Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force is assisting in the search for Christian.

If you have information regarding his whereabouts, you are asked to call your local law enforcement agency.
