High school football coaches, players honored at luncheon

(WTVM) - It was a day to recognize the best and the brightest on the field.

SportsVisions honored players and coaches Thursday at the Fifth Annual Valley Area High School Football Awards Luncheon.

Where can you find 50 of the area's best offensive and defensive football players? No place else but the Hilton Garden Inn in Columbus this Thursday afternoon.

The awards luncheon sponsored by SportsVisions recognizes those students who excel in football, and who better to do it than DJ Jones, former Carver High standout, UGA football player and NFL player.

"Being a local kid growing up in the community, I know how important it is to get recognition," said DJ Jones with SportsVisions.

One of many players recognized was Player of the Year and sophomore Jawon Pass, the 6 foot 5 inches tall quarterback from Carver.

"It was a lot of pressure but I had to deal with it and lead my team as a sophomore," Pass said.

Players weren't the only ones given kudos for their performance. Twenty-five area high school football coaches were recognized for their talents as leaders.

Speaking of leaders, the guest speaker was none other than Guz Malzahn, Auburn's head football coach.

"Uh, this is right up my ally. I'm an old high school football coach and been to banquets like this and this is a big deal," said Malzahn. "It's a big deal for coaches, players and parents and congratulations to them all here."

The Coach of the Year award went To Mike Swaney of Marion County.
