MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama Education Superintendent Doctor Tommy Bice says his biggest concern right now is that children will leave for Christmas break and go hungry.

Nearly 60 percent of Alabama's public school children participate in the free or reduced lunch program. For most of those children, school is their only source for regular nutrition.

To help bridge the gap many schools offer a backpack program; discreetly tucking extra food inside a students' backpack on Fridays to get them through the weekend.

The backpack program helps about 300 thousand people a year. Forty percent or more of the people who receive this food are children. The food is supplied by the Montgomery Area Food Bank.
