BATON ROUGE, LA (KSLA) -

Do you think people should have to take mandatory parenting classes before they consider having a baby? Louisiana State Representative Regina Barrow says she thinks it may be a good idea.

Barrow is executive chair of the Louisiana Family Preservation Study Group. She is considering introducing a bill next session that would require anyone having a child to take a parenting class.

"You have to get a license for literally everything else we have to do in life, and one of things we don't have to have any training or certification for is being a parent," says Barrow.

Barrow says they are looking at what other states have done.  She says they are thinking about who should be included and what the classes should cover.

"I had to learn quick, and it just kind of came out of me, it is not something that I had to go to class for," says Aaron Debase. Debase takes care of this girlfriends kids, and does not think a class is necesarry to learn how to care for children.

Barrow also compared the mandatory parenting classes to a driver's education class. In order to get a license, you need to take a class. So, she says in order to have a baby, potential parents should take a class.

"That was the premise behind my thinking in terms of requiring individuals, especially teen parents, to perhaps go through some kind of training once they have a child," says Barrow.

The group is expected to meet at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge Wednesday to discuss the topic.
