ASU set to name new president this week

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University is set to select its next president some time this week and Governor Robert Bentley is weighing in on what he would like to see come out of the search that's going on in the middle of controversy surrounding the university.

As the ASU Presidential Search Committee puts the wraps on its selection and the nominations are brought to the university's board of trustees, Governor Bentley is hopeful the board will select the most viable leader.

The ASU Board of Trustees scheduled a meeting for Friday, Dec. 20 at which time they will interview and vote on the next president.

Governor Bentley says he wants to see a strong president selected to address the forensic audit and issues raised by the accreditation agency Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

SACS has concerns over possible financial mismanagement and fraud revealed in the audit.

"It would be best for the university if we could find a very good president now and give that president the authority to do what needs to be done, and that's what I'm for," Gov. Bentley said. "I'm for moving forward as quickly as we can."

Gov. Bentley, who by vestige of the governor's office is also the president of the board of each of the state's public universities, says he think the investigation will work itself out. But he believes whoever ASU selects as its next leader needs to make sure the students, faculty and staff are protected.

Each of the three finalists, Senator Quinton Ross, Brigadier General Samuel Nichols (Ret.) and Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd, each say they're optimistic about handling the audit released on the school's finances this year.
