PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

With pictures on the mantelpiece and a candle burning in his memory, Donna Moore is celebrating her son's life as she tries to cope with his death.

"What I want to do is let everyone know what you can do in these circumstances when you lose a child, how you can honor a child at the same time," she told WSFA in an exclusive interview.

Around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, December 12, 2013, Prattville police responded to a call of a subject being shot at 108 Morris Circle.

When they arrive, officers found 23-year-old Robert Keith Nichols- "Robby" as is loved ones call him- suffering from a gunshot wound. He passed away at the scene.

During their investigation, police say they determined that Joseph Allen Nolin, 23, fired the shot that resulted in Nichols' death and Nolin was arrested and charged with murder. He is set to appear in court in Autauga County December 30th for his preliminary hearing.

According to Donna Moore, Nolin and her son had been close friends for several years and Robby had recently moved in with Nolin and another man at 108 Morris Circle.

"I don't know what the turn of events were that caused this. I don't even know that I want to know. But I know that Robby was still being a friend like he's always been taught," she said.

Authorities have released few details on the deadly shooting.

But Robby's family has decided not to dwell on what happened. Instead, they're celebrating his life as they try to cope with his death.

"Robby was the kind that every time you saw him, he had a smile. Every time you saw him, he always had a hug for you. He always had a handshake,"  his mother said. "Robby's favorite time of year was Christmas. He loved being with his family. He loved being with his friends. I take comfort in knowing that my Robby is spending Christmas with the Lord."

At his visitation in Prattville Tuesday night at Ridout's Prattville Chapel, a Christmas tree was decorated by Robby's family in his honor. Relatives and friends brought gifts for "Toys for Tots' and placed them under the tree.

"Robby was one to always give back and he loved kids. We want to take all of those toys, however many there are, and we're going to pay it forward in Robby's honor to give it to a child. He loved making people smile and it would warm his heart to know that he's still doing that at Christmas," Moore said.

A "Celebration of Life Service" will be held at Ridout's Prattville Chapel (347 East Main Street) on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 1:00pm.

Contributions can be made to the Robby Nichols Memorial Fund at any Guardian Credit Union location.
