Columbus Fire Dept. hosts Toys for Tots drive for families in need

Posted: Updated:

The Columbus Fire Department and EMS held their toy drive Wednesday morning and gave Christmas gifts to needy families.

Sponsors from local retailers, businesses, and retirees from the fire department and EMS came together to donate toys to almost 60 children and more than 20 families.

Toys, teddy bears, and bicycles were given to parents for children ages one through 12.

Columbus Fire Chief Ricky Shores says the department as whole has a responsibility to give back to the community.

"Well, it means a tremendous amount. We don't always go out and fight fires every day," said Chief Shores. "We feel as an organization that we have the moral responsibility to give back to our community, and our sponsors feel that way as well and that's why we're here."

Bikes and armfuls of red and white bags filled with toys were carried out the door by thankful parents and bright eyed children.

Chief Shores says they are just happy they can make Christmas possible for so many families.
