$1 million Mega Millions prize won in Columbus

The lucky winner from Atlanta who claimed half of last Tuesday's near-record Mega Millions jackpot has come forward.

But here in Columbus, we're not letting them steal the entire spotlight.

The nine-figure jackpot wins are getting most of the attention, but other substantial sums of money were distributed to players during Mega Millions mania . On Dec. 18, 53-year-old Reginald McCoy claimed a $1 million prize from his ticket purchase at the Winn Dixie on Hunt Ave. Store director Jasper Perry said it's the first time the supermarket has sold a big winner, and he is very excited that someone from the community is going to benefit.

"We know our customers quite well. We know them by first name basis. Like I said, we're like a family," says Perry.

McCoy matched five numbers, missing only the Mega Ball. According to lottery officials, the odds of doing that are about one in 18.5 million. That figure is roughly twice the population of the state of Georgia. Statistically speaking, every person in Georgia would each need to buy two tickets to get just one winner.

Also announced today was the name of the jackpot winner from Stone Mountain, Georgia.  Ira Curry bought the ticket in one of Atlanta's wealthiest neighborhoods. The upscale office building on Lenox Road NE in Buckhead, Atlanta is home to attorneys, consulting firms, and a small newsstand in the lobby that sold the winning ticket. We spoke to a man who was in the building Tuesday, but he was in too much of a hurry to play the lottery downstairs.

"I happened to be around doing some business so, I felt the urge but then I said, 'no, I won't win.'  but obviously someone did," said Joseph Howell.

We still know very little about the Atlanta-area winner. She may have been passing through, she could be an office employee, or possibly even a partner at one of those major firms. So far, Ira Curry has not participated in any media interviews.
