TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Production at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance prepares to shift into another gear after the opening of a new logistics center.

Governor Robert Bentley was on hand for the ribbon cutting at the $700 million, 900,000 square foot center. It will house billions of parts for the five Mercedes-Benz vehicles made in Vance.

Officials say 600 workers and service providers will work at the facility.

The center will receive components for the vehicles and organize them for the building process. Industry insiders say that once the center is in full gear, it will likely attract more auto suppliers.

"It's just going to give more impetus for more suppliers," Dara Longgrear with the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority said. "Not just for Mercedes but for some of the other German OEMs in the area."

Bentley says this facility is important for the area and Alabama. It opens Friday.
