TROY, AL (WSFA) -

An ongoing federal lawsuit involving the Troy City School Board of Education ended with a settlement Wednesday.

The lawsuit claimed the school system was using a policy, which allows parents to request certain teachers, as a way to segregate students.

The school system has agreed to end the parent request policy. As a part of the agreement the school system with also partner with the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance Program.

The school system claimed the policy only helped children learn and added that with a student population with a little more than 60 percent African-America, it's difficult to have an equal number of black and white students in every classroom.

The lawsuit was filed in August by Councilwoman DeJarilyn Henderson.
