MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Maxwell AFB family housing, 42nd air base wing and Montgomery Area Chambers of Commerce team up to officially dedicate River Region Freedom Park Playground on Maxwell AFB Wednesday.

Freedom Park offers a variety of open spaces and playground for military children and their families. It was funded through donations by the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Charitable Foundation and a land donation by Maxwell Family Housing.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in December marking the construction of the park as a gathering place for member of the military and their families.

"For decades our service members and their families have enriched this community as neighbors, volunteers and civic leaders," said Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board Horace H. Horn Jr. "We owe them a debt of gratitude for what they've done locally, and most importantly, for the sacrifices they make in defending our nation and our freedoms. River Region Freedom Park is just one small way we can say thank you."

The construction of the park results from public and private partnerships among the River Region government and business entities. The initial grant of $100,000, committed from the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, will fund the project. An additional $100,000 received from contributions makes the amount half of the fundraising goal of $400,000.

If you would like to make a donation to further help the project you can contact the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation at (334) 240-9423.
