Group steps in after Montgomery woman's home is vandalized

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The holidays can quickly turn when crime hits your home. That's what happened to one Montgomery woman.

"It just broke my heart. When I walked in the door, I just wanted to run," said Joan French, who found her home vandalized on Tuesday.

French has loved living in her home for the past 17 years, but this week crooks kicked in the back door and proceeded to destroy it.

"I hadn't had the chance to go through everything. I know I need to, but I guess I'm just numb," French said.

Walls were graffitied, the floor sprayed with a fire extinguisher, items were thrown all over the house, and the worst part, the vandals marked over every one of her children's and grandchildren's pictures.

However, one group was able to quickly step in and help ease at least some of the pain. It's called Neighbors in Christ. The organization works closely with police to help victims of crime.

"We want to serve you as a community," said Tim Tadlock, who serves as the Victim Service Coordinator for Neighbors in Christ.

Members were at French's house within 10 minutes of being contacted. They fixed the door where the criminals broke in and reinforced other entryways so it can't happen again. Members of Neighbors in Christ say they hope they are reinforcing something much more important.

"With us being the hands of Christ and living the Samaritan story on a daily basis, I know there is good in this world and we just want it to be shown," Tadlock said.

French chimed in, saying, "it's a big reassurance to know they are behind me 100 percent."

French was not at the home when it was vandalized. She says as of right now it appears nothing was actually stolen.

Another bit of good news, although the frames were ruined, she says she was able to save those treasured baby pictures. Police say they are continuing to investigate the case. If you need help from Neighbors in Christ or would like to help out, call the office at 334-271-3313.
