80-year-old woman killed in accident leaving church, community mourns

Two days before Christmas, an elderly Upatoi woman visited her church on Sunday morning for the very last time.

80-year-old Anny Schenk and her 78-year-old friend were leaving Sunday service when they got into a car accident on Macon Road.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said he received a call to the scene at Macon Rd. and Jenkins Rd. around 11:30 Sunday morning. Bryan says Schenk suffered a broken neck. Upatoi United Methodist Church members say the pair were like Thelma and Louise.

"It's hard on everybody; for those that lose folks and those that struggle with still being here," Upatoi United Methodist Church Pastor Chip Grantham said.

Pastor Grantham says Schenk known as "Ms. Anny" was a great cook and loved to teach the word of God.

"Her Sunday school class is going to have a really hard time with this because they had just said goodbye to her and wished her a Merry Christmas," says Grantham. "I had one of the lady's last night at the Box Springs location that had sat next to Anny at Sunday school. She was having a really hard time with it."

Schenk's friend and passenger in the car, who's name we're not releasing to protect her privacy, is currently listed in critical condition at an area hospital.

Pastor Grantham says just a few years ago, Schenk's friend had a car accident near the same intersection.

Her friend stopped driving soon after, according to pastor Grantham. He says that's when Schenk started driving almost everywhere they went.

"Ms. Anny was a sweet person. She had an incredible amount of patience. She was just a very good natured lady," Grantham adds.

Pastor Grantham says Schenk's best friend is very active in the community and the church. He says everyone is praying she recovers.

The 84-year-old driver of the other car is said to be completely distraught about what happened. She was also taken to the hospital with injuries but is doing fine.
