HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Toys for Tots put out the call and the community stepped up.

Saturday, workers said they were in desperate need after coming up some 600 bags short of Christmas gifts for needy kids. Sunday, volunteers showed up once again at the shopping center off South Memorial Parkway, behind the Goody's store, to take more donations.

The donation drive was originally scheduled to end Saturday evening, but because donations were so low, they decided to extend it another day. Volunteers said they still have about 200 children they need to collect for.

The need is especially high for items for infants 0-18 months and for children aged 10-13.

After putting out the initial call for help and seeing the community step up, volunteers said they still feel great knowing people still care.

"Huntsville never fails us," said volunteer coordinator Karen Martin. "I know that if we can just get the word out to them, they always step forward and they have been coming in all day long. We've been grabbing bags and talking to families, and it's just been coming in wonderfully."

Paige Poe stopped by to donate to Toys for Tots for the first time on Sunday.

"This helps so many children and my family has had to take donations as presents so I know it's very important to have a Merry Christmas for kids who need it," she said.

Donations were extended Sunday and Monday. Monday evening, officials reported that their goal had been met.

Volunteers expressed their gratitude to the community for ensuring that children in the Huntsville area will have a very merry Christmas.

"People have listened and heard our plea. Madison County always comes through. We really appreciate it," said Martin.

In all, 3,000 children will be helped this season.
