NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An elementary school in Antioch is getting an early gift - brand new classrooms for students and teachers.

A big expansion at A.Z. Kelley Elementary School was just finished.

"We started moving papers and a few boxes on Friday," said school principal Marsha Dunn. "We've been here over the weekend and today trying to get things in order."

A new wing at the school will open with 12 more classrooms. That means no more teaching inside portable units.

The school was built for 600 students but has more than 750 enrolled now because the area has grown quickly.

The new space should help ease overcrowding.

"We have two first-grade teachers sharing a music room right now and our enrollment is growing all the time," said Dunn. "We're really excited. It was a great Christmas present."

Students will start 2014 inside the new rooms.

The principal said the extra space should last them for at least the next three years.

A new school on Smith Springs Road is set to open in 2015 and should also help with overcrowding.
