Speculation high, confirmation low as Eagle fans await Army announcement

Posted: Updated:
STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Blogs and message boards continue to whirl over whether Georgia Southern's head football coach will leave Statesboro for West Point.

Some had predicted Army would announce Monday that Jeff Monken had become their coach.

Sports writer Sal Interdonato, who covers Army football for HudsonValley.com, tweeted Monday that Army had offered Monken a contract and were awaiting a response.

A staff member of the Army Athletics office told WTOC by phone Monday that the Black Knights had no announcement and no announcement of any kind would come Thursday or Friday at the earliest.

Monken, 38-16 in four seasons at Southern, interviewed last week at Army's request as one of several candidates.

Monday evening, GSU athletics director Tom Kleinlein contacted media members to confirm Monken remained the Eagles' head coach.
