HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The firefighters at Station 16 in Huntsville have some furry additions at their station. Four puppies, two boys and two girls, were put in a box and left outside the station. The box simply read "Merry Christmas."

"I just assumed that one of the guys had gotten a present here and took the box outside and was going to get it when they left and everyone else kind of assumed the same thing," said firefighter Jude Jennings.

That assumption left the box outside for hours, until the quiet box started to sound off.

"The box was moving and making a sound," Jennings said. "He heard a whimpering sound coming out of it. We looked inside and there were four little puppies huddled up in there on top of each other."

Jennings said his crew comes in at eight in the morning. The box had been spotted by other firefighters before his shift started.

"We are assuming it was dropped off really early Wednesday morning or late Tuesday night," Jennings said. "Either way the puppies were very cold and hungry."

No one spotted who dumped the dogs and left. "That's a cold-hearted person to do that and it's almost like they are laughing about it by writing 'Merry Christmas,'" Jennings said.

The firefighters took the dogs in from the cold and fed them.  Now Jennings hopes to get the pups a new place to call home.

"Somebody suggested we name them Peace, Love, Hope and Joy since they are Christmas puppies apparently."

The dogs will be taken to the vet on Thursday.

Thursday, the dogs were taken to the vet where they were given a clean bill of health and one was adopted.  Now, there are two girls and one boy left.  The Greater Huntsville Humane Society will be taking the puppies off of Jennings' hands and they will be spayed and neutered. The Humane Society can be reached at 256-881-8092.
