Breast cancer survivor starts investigation into UMC's Cancer Institute

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A local activist and breast cancer survivor has started an investigation with the state attorney general and state auditors offices regarding cancer research money at UMMC.

Stephanie Parker-Weaver recently received a copy of an independent external advisory board report that notes that some money from a recurring $5 million dollar grant for cancer research was used for other expenses.

Weaver believes world renowned cancer expert, Dr. Lucio Miele was demoted from his position as director of the UMMC Cancer Institute because he informed others at UMMC about the alleged re-purposed money.

"The question really becomes is there a real commitment by UMMC for a National Cancer Institute title and designation. If it is then they will change their ways and if not they need to quit playing games with not only Dr. Miele and his staffers livelihood, but with the lies of those who are affected by cancer," Parker-Weaver said.

Staff from UMMC responded by saying, "The $5 million annual state allocation for the UMMC Cancer Institute continues to be used to support activities and infrastructure for cancer programs. None of this funding has been re purposed or otherwise spent for other uses. Our commitment to research and related programs that address our state's greatest needs and opportunities in preventing, treating and curing cancer has never been stronger and will continue to grow."

Why did Cracker Barrel fire Brad's wife? It's really no one's business, other than Brad's and his wife's, but that hasn't stopped people around the world from demanding answers after a Harrison County, IN, man publicly asked the restaurant chain why his wife Nanette was let go from her job at the Cracker Barrel in Corydon.
