TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Reid Park Zoo welcomed four new lion cubs just before Christmas.

Zoo officials reported the zoo's female lion, Kaya, gave birth to five cubs on Dec. 23, but one did not survive.

Officials said the three male cubs and one female cub are gaining weight and receiving great care in two "bedrooms" and a cub den, according to a news release.

"A litter of five cubs is unusual," Zoo Veterinarian Alexis Moreno stated in the release. "It would be a challenge for five cubs to thrive and we are monitoring the health of the remaining four offspring closely. It is still a large litter. I am cautiously optimistic at this point."

The father, named Shombay, is separated from the rest of the pride for safety, officials said. The public also cannot see them for another six to eight weeks for the cubs' safety.

This is Kaya and Shombay's second litter of cubs at Reid Park Zoo. In July 2011, Kaya delivered three cubs that are now grown and at other accredited zoos.

The zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit the website at www.reidparkzoo.org.
