RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Two weeks before New Year's Eve, Richmond's annual ball raise was canceled. However, Hardywood Brewery stepped in last-minute to host the New Year's Eve tradition.

On December 18th, the Byrd Theater Foundation announced it would not host the New Year's Eve Ball Raise atop the historic theater, citing safety concerns.

Late Monday night, Todd Schall-Vess says he received a call from Hardywood Brewery. Hardywood agreed to host the ball for 2014.

"The 11th hour had come and gone when we finally managed to cut a deal here," he said. "I hadn't given up hope but I was thinking of giving up hope."

As co-founder of the event and owner of the ball, Schall-Vess said he reached out to Hardywood early on.

"It feels really good that we're going into the eighth year of tradition in a different location," said Schall-Vess. "That's perfectly OK. I'd be OK doing a different location every year just as long as it keeps going up and the tradition continues."

Where the ball will rise next year remains to be seen. Schall-Vess says, he's already gotten some interest from people who want to host the event next year but he wants to get through the 2014 celebration first.
