NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

As the Vanderbilt Commodores prepare for Saturday's BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, much of the attention centers around head coach James Franklin, who has been named as a strong candidate for head coaching positions elsewhere.

Franklin's name has surfaced surrounding the job openings at powerhouse programs Penn State and Texas, and Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams confirms to Channel 4 Sports that he has been contacted about Franklin.

Williams wouldn't say if the interest was from the college and/or the pro level, but he did say he obviously intends to do all he can to keep Franklin at Vanderbilt.

Penn State athletic director David Joyner said Thursday that a decision could come in a matter of days on his school's replacement for Bill O'Brien, who departed this week to coach the Houston Texans in the NFL.

Franklin and the Commodores are in Hoover, AL, putting in final preparations for their bowl game with the Houston Cougars, which kicks off Saturday at noon.

Franklin would not comment on his own status, but talking to 102.5 The Game's Greg Pogue on Thursday morning, he talked about the effect of all this speculation on his team.

Franklin has even been mentioned as a possible candidate with the Cleveland Browns, a team owned by Jimmy Haslam, a longtime supporter of the Tennessee Volunteers and brother of Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam.
