Community members call for end of violence in Columbus at Charles Foster memorial service

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Dozens of community members joined the family of Charles Foster, Jr. today, Jan. 4, for a time of honoring his life, and calling for an end to violence in the Fountain City.

Foster was shot at Club Majestic after ringing in 2013 last New Year.

Since then, city leaders have been working tirelessly to close down the club and others like it. Some say these venues are havens for violence.

"If they rise to the legal level that allows them to be shutdown," says Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, "We will take those actions, because all business owners need to know, you're welcome in Columbus, Georgia. You're welcome to do business, and to make a great living, but you will not make money off of criminal haven. And you will not make money off of places where people act recklessly, and where violence occurs, and certainly where there is injury or bodily harm."

Dequandrea Truitt, 21, was arrested and charged with Foster's murder. Five others were also wounded in the shooting.

Columbus closed the year with 25 homicides in 2013.
