HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Utilities is on standby this weekend because of the cold weather.

The utility company has placed additional crews throughout the city in case of any outages.

If the power does go out, the company asks that you turn off your heating system. Once the power is restored, wait about 15 minutes before turning it back on.

Other organizations also prepared for severe cold and winter weather conditions.

The Alabama Department of Transportation is monitoring road conditions and will communicate with local authorities to determine what actions may be necessary, according to a press release.

ALDOT spokesman Tony Harris urged caution when traveling.

"We advise against traveling when freezing conditions are possible on Alabama's roads and bridges," Harris said.

He urged motorists to monitor local news media outlets for road conditions and weather updates, and to be prepared when venturing out. He said drivers need to be alert for icy road and bridge conditions, allow extra travel time, adjust speed based on existing weather and roadway conditions, allow extra distance between other vehicles, ensure vehicles are in good operating order, and to have sufficient fuel.
