(WTVM) - This cold weather may have come as a surprise to many in the Valley area. Remember these tips to keep your home and vehicle ready for winter.

Tips for winterizing your home:

-Make sure your pipes are insulated, and you don't put any grease down your drains. They can clog the system

-Open bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing

-It helps to keep the thermostat the same temperature both during the day and at night to prevent pipes from freezing or bursting

Tips for driving on icy roads:

- Be especially mindful of bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze first

- Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop

- Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake

- Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists

- Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills

Winter safety tips for your vehicle:

- Check the concentration level of the antifreeze in your vehicle's engine

- Add a stronger windshield cleaning/de-icer fluid solution to keep the spray from freezing

- Check air pressure in your tires (including the spare) and replace any worn tires.

- Check your radiator and battery

- Fill up your gas tank. This will help prevent freezing and keep you from being stranded in the cold if you run out of gas
