(CNN) - A record number of Americans consider themselves politically independent, according to a new poll from Gallup.
The poll found 42 percent of Americans didn't consider themselves members of either major party.
The independent surge seems to be hurting Republicans more than Democrats;
Only 25 percent identified as Republican which is a record low.
The numbers for Democrats remained roughly unchanged over the last four years at 31 percent.
The poll showed the number of independent voters increased late last year, around the time of the government shutdown and the botched rollout of the new health care law.
