Apple recognizes Lee-Scott Academy for "iConnect to Excellence" initiative

A Lee County private school is celebrating a major accomplishment for harnessing technology in the classroom.

Lee-Scott Academy's "iConnect To Excellence" initiative put mobile tech devices into the hands of every Pre K through 12th grade student. The program has resulted in the world's most celebrated tech innovator, Apple, honoring the school for its pursuit of excellence.

Lee-Scott Academy (LSA) has reason to strike-up the band. The pre-K through 12th grade private school is celebrating being named an "Apple Distinguished" school.

There are fewer than 200 schools in the nation awarded the honor, which is designated for public and private schools and universities meeting strict criteria for innovation, leadership and excellence through technology in the classroom.

"We made a huge commitment to Apple to help us help our students, and help our education system become more relevant in today's world," said Don Roberts, the headmaster at LSA.

Roberts began using apple devices at LSA five years ago, before the current versions of iPhones and iPads existed.

"We had minimal success, because of the expense. When the iPad came out, we knew we had found what we needed," Roberts said. "We know they are more engaged than they ever have been, and we think if they are engaged they will learn more, and that will translate into college acceptance, and better ACT scores, and all those things."

Roberts says the teachers at LSA deserve most of the credit for implementing this type of technology into their classrooms.
