ORACLE, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It's a story that created a lot of buzz in the quiet community of Saddlebrooke three months ago. A 22-year-old man was found in bed with a 63-year-old woman by her husband who then allegedly shot him.

Stephen Chapman said he wants to clear things up. He said he didn't deserve to get shot in the hand or charged with a misdemeanor in what appears to have been a love triangle.

When asked if he considered his conduct disorderly Chapman replied,  "No not at all. If someone hits you with a cane, wakes you up from your sleep, threatens to shoot you and does, I mean somebody is going to get mad. But I got out of there."

Chapman acknowledged that it looked bad but he said the couple invited him to spend the night because his furnace broke. He's known them for two years and even used to live in their home.

He said the woman crawled into his bed the night of the shooting, unbeknownst to him. When asked if the two had a sexual relationship in the past Chapman said, "Yeah we have. Fall of 2012."

But he said there had been no sexual contact between them since.  "No, not at all or the year before that."

Chapman said he met the woman through Craigslist. She paid him to do odd jobs around the house, bought him several cars and he even vacationed with her, Chapman said.

"It was just a friendship bond," said Chapman.

He says the two remain friends to this day. The woman declined a request for an interview.

Chapman was charged with misconduct - reports say he tried to attack the woman's husband.

Chapman continues to fight the charge but he said he's not eligible for a public defender because it's a misdemeanor.
