CANTON, GA (CBS46) -

A Cherokee County man had a moment he'll never forget Monday morning, surprising his daughter and son at their schools following a year-long deployment to Afghanistan.

Capt. Robert Abrams of the Georgia Army National Guard served in the western part of Afghanistan, his first long deployment since serving in Iraq in 2010. At the time, his daughter Lexi and son Preston were around 7 and 3 years old, respectively. With this homecoming, both are old enough to appreciate the importance of dad coming home safely.

"You spend a year away from them, come home, you realize how much you miss," said Abrams, after surprising his daughter Lexi at Creekland Middle School in Canton.

"I'm going to make sure he doesn't go out of my arms," said Lexi, of how she plans to spend her time with dad in the coming days.

"Really makes me proud to see how mature she's getting," said Abrams. "Makes me real proud to be her father."

After surprising Lexi, Abrams went to nearby Avery Elementary School in Canton to surprise his son in the hallway.

"I'm glad my daddy's home," said Preston, with a big smile on his face after hugging his dad.

Abrams has a couple of months of rest time before returning to active duty with the Georgia National Guard.
