LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) -

Since October 1, 2013, local veterinary clinics have taken on the role of animal services in Lee County.

Last September, the Lee County Commission voted to transfer the budgeted $130,000 for the Lee County Humane Society's contracted services to the county's Environmental Services Department after the two could not reach a agreement over the budget.

"The vets seem happy with the way we seem to be operating because we are spreading around the county funds to the community. The animals go straight to a veterinarian every time. They are working diligently to adopt them out, give them a home or find the home they came from. So all in all we have nothing to complain about right now," explains Lee County Director of Environmental Services, Chris Bozeman.

Bozeman and local veterinarians reported that the program has been successful to commission members at their regular meeting Monday.

During the last part of 2013, animal control picked up 210 animals; 46 were adopted, 21 were returned to homes, and 94 were euthanized.

Of the nearly $128,000 appropriated to Animal Control, Lee County has spent about $13,000 on animal care, paying veterinarians for seven days of boarding, a flea pill and euthanasia.

"Right now we're saving money and the animals are getting the same benefit as they were before, or better," says Bozeman, "Right now they are seeing a vet every time, every animal we pick up goes straight to a licensed vet and its being done at a lower price than the contract was before."
