Con artists targeting Georgia Power customers

(WTVM) -

Georgia Power officials are warning customers that scammers are once again calling and visiting residences, posing as company employees.

The imposters say the customer has a past due balance, and in order to prevent shutoff, they must purchase a pre-paid card by providing credit and debit account information.

Mike Miles, a Georgia Power representative, says a real company employee would never ask a customer to do this. He says if a customer's account ever became past due, the person would receive a prerecorded message that gives a phone number they can call to find out about their account.

"I'm not sure how they gather their information, and what they're trying to do, and how they get that information from the customer," says Miles, "but in some cases they know the exact amount of what the customer owes and then, that really makes it believable to the customer."

If you think you have received calls or visits from a scam artist, you can call Georgia Power's 24 hour customer service line at 888-660-5890.
