SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The Krewe of Sobek parade kicked off the Mardi Gras parade season in Shreveport-Bossier Saturday afternoon.

The theme for the krewe was "Sobek under the big top", and it's the 11 year since it's paraded through the Queensboro neighborhood.

Shreveport residents Russell and Vicki Artison made sure to claim their spots early on the parade route. They feel it's important to support the regions Mardi Gras celebrations. "Because I know Shreveport can be better than New Orleans, hear that New Orleans?" said Artison.

"It's wonderful, we have a lot of excitement! We have hundreds in our parade this year!" Sobek's parade chairman Shirley Pierson said.

Only the Krewe of Highland and Sobek parade through the neighborhoods, which Bigham explained is special for residents,  "A lot of people don't get a chance to see that, we take it for granted but a lot of people don't leave outside of their neighborhoods so we wanted to bring it so they would have the opportunity to do so," she said.

"It's a nice tradition for the queensboro neighborhood and everything and I think everybody enjoys it and have a lot of fun," said Shreveport resident Larry Hope.

All of the fun and beads mean big business for Shreveport-Bossier, tourism leaders say between the parades, balls, and shopping, the carnival season will bring in more than 17 million dollars into the local economy.

The money each krewe generates go to local causes. "This year we picked meals on wheels and we did the Rutherford House, we'll be making donations to those two," said Bigham.

Parade organizers say it takes a full year to plan for the event, as soon as the last parade float passes through, they begin planning again for the next year.

On Monday, the Krewe of Harambee moves through downtown Shreveport. The parade begins at one p.m. at the municipal auditorium and heads down Milam Street to Edwards Street. After it turns onto Edwards, it makes another turn onto Texas street, then heads back toward the municipal auditorium.
