COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Lula Huff, the Muscogee County Tax Commissioner, was the recipient of the 2014 Unity Award at the breakfast held annually on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Huff is the first African American tax commissioner in Muscogee County. She was first elected to the position in 1997.

The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity has hosted the event annually since its inception in 1986. It was created to honor people in Columbus who promote unity and progress in the community through both words and actions.

Dr. King, who was a member of the fraternity, championed these principals during the civil rights movement.

The guest speaker at the event was Dr. Barry C. Black, the United States Senate Chaplain. He is also a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral.
