Fort Benning conducting controlled burning March 13

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

The Directorate of Public Works is conducting a controlled/prescribed burn in the south and central portions of post training areas today, March 13.

Winds are predicted from the northwest and will keep smoke away from most sensitive areas. However, community members may notice some smoke near these areas today.

Prescribed burning helps prevent the occurrence of wildfires that can result from some military training activities.  Firebreaks around impact areas are maintained annually to contain any wildfires that may be triggered by munitions.

Fort Benning officials say their intention is to keep the public informed on why, and when, they conduct controlled burning on post.

For more information, community members may call 706-545-2237.  For after hours, please leave a message.

You may also visit the Smoke and Sound Web site at this link for maps and other information on training.  Individuals who want to be notified of firing on ranges and prescribed burning may be added to the notification list by emailing usarmy.benning.imcom.mbx.web@mail.mil.
