Phenix City eyes new projects for growth

Phenix City eyes new developments for growth

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Phenix City is redeveloping the city around its new additions along the river.

"It is the hot spot in Phenix City. And we certainly realize that in Phenix City and we certainly need to capitalize on that," explains Phenix City mayor, Eddie Lowe.

That's exactly what Mayor Lowe plans to do by upgrading the landscape and buildings around the Third Avenue area. Costly investments to increase traffic and revenue in the Chattahoochee Valley.

"Building the parking garage, buying the property down from that, being able to help acquire some of this property from the Marriott as well as Troy University," Lowe said. "That's an investment that we know and feel strongly that it will bring a return on."

Bringing more business across to bridge to what Mayor Lowe says he hopes will be the new hub of the Phenix City area.

The plan: to redesign the Phenix Plaza shopping center and build a more-than-100 room Marriott hotel that will overlook the Chattahoochee River. Other new additions include a 208 car parking garage that sits in front of the hotel, a zip line across the river and the possibility of new restaurants around the area.

Attractions city officials say they have big hopes for.

"It will create jobs, but the other thing that we're really hoping and praying for is that it will create a venue where thousands of people will come to Phenix City and also as well as Columbus. That it will have an economic impact that will help our community and our citizens," adds Mayor Lowe.

Mayor Lowe tells me he hopes to open the hotel to the public in July. The others will follow shortly after. The projects are all in connection with the positively Phenix City campaign.
