District 31 GOP showdown Tuesday

Jimmy Collier Jimmy Collier
Mike Holmes Mike Holmes
ELMORE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) -

The stage is set for a GOP showdown in House District 31 on Tuesday.

The seat has been vacant for five months, which means no representation for constituents in Elmore and Coosa counties during the first four weeks of the 2014 Legislative Session.

That will all change as early as this week.  Either Jimmy Collier or Mike Holmes, both republicans, will assume the responsibility after the votes are certified.

Collier is relying on relationships in the community and his reputation for social responsibility to stand out to voters.

"I enjoy doing things for the community. I was president of the Chamber [of Commerce], Rotary and Quail Walk. I just enjoy leading people," Collier said.

A longtime local businessman, Collier says he will make the right decisions without outside influence.

"I give the people an opportunity to vote for someone who's going in with an open mind and listen to what the people of the district want to say. I've got no preconceived ideas, I'm not going in knowing how I'm going to vote before I get to the floor," Collier said.

Mike Holmes says he's no career politician, but he's already involved in the legislative process inside the State House.

"I'm a grassroots activist, I spend a lot of time in the legislature on issues I am in favor of and trying to help get passed, and those and I'm opposed to trying to stop," Holmes said.

Homes currently volunteers with a legislative watchdog group, gained endorsements from political action committees and high marks from the NRA.

"I'm aware what the issues are, and I've made it my business to be knowledgeable and informed on those issues," Holmes said.

The race was originally scheduled for last week, but Gov. Robert Bentley was forced to delay the vote due to the winter storm. The 19 precincts in District 31 will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Results are expected no later than 8:30 p.m.

Probate Judge John Enslen says the Wetumpka Civic Center will be open for those who want to watch the returns.

The District 31 House seat became vacant when former state Rep. Barry Mask resigned to take a job with the Alabama Realtors Association.
