Super 8 Motel murder suspect appears in court

A suspect in Columbus' first homicide of the year has finally appeared before a judge after his case was postponed twice.

Trevon Brown is one of four people charged with the murder of 39-year-old Troy Saunders.

Saunders was killed last month at the Super 8 Motel on Warm Springs Road.

Brown pled not guilty to several serious charges including murder and aggravated assault.

Columbus investigators testified two other suspects. Mayson Gibson, 20, and 17-year-old Niesha Jones tell them Brown and a fourth suspect were the shooters.

Brown's defense attorney Tim Flournoy says the alleged couple is trying to save each other.

"The only weapon that was recovered was recovered at Mason Gibson's home," said Flournoy. "Ms. Jones and Mr. Gibson had time to cook up a story and try to put the blame on others. At the trial the evidence will show that my client did not have a gun. He did not fire a gun and that Mason Gibson and Christopher Womack were the shooters."

Flournoy says Brown has never been in trouble with the law and does not have a criminal record.

He says the victim and his friend were at the motel to sell the group marijuana. The fourth suspect Christopher Womack has not been captured.

Brown is being held with no bond.
