PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Flames destroyed an empty domed warehouse in Phoenix early Wednesday morning.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Nolan Galligan said about 36 firefighters went on the defensive immediately after it was determined the warehouse near 25th Avenue and Jackson Street couldn't be saved.

Galligan said firefighters are taught the dangers of the "bowstrung," or domed roof, such as the one on the warehouse, because of the potential for collapse.

"If only one part of the structure fails, then the whole roof comes down," Galligan said. "That's exactly what happened."

Galligan said if firefighters had been inside when the north side of the roof collapsed, "There's no way they could have survived."

He said the building had been vacant for at least 20 years, though one structure inside was often used as a shelter by the homeless, though no one was inside the warehouse when the fire began around midnight.

There were no injuries, Galligan said.
