AGUILA, AZ (CBS5) -

An Aguila mother is the second person charged with animal cruelty after horses at her home were found in abused and neglected condition.

Maria Valenzuela, 50, was arrested Wednesday at her home and booked into the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail on seven counts of animal abuse-related charges after Maricopa County sheriff's deputies found four abused and neglected horses at her home in Aguila.

Her son, 27-year-old Jason Valenzuela, was arrested at the home Feb. 4 on similar charges after deputies served a search warrant at the home in the community about 25 miles west of Wickenburg and found the horses in need of food and medical attention, according to an MCSO news release.

Jason Valenzuela was initially investigated in August 2013, after the sheriff's office received a tip through the MCSO Animal Cruelty Hotline. Detectives determined the horses were in fair condition at the time and schooled Jason Valenzuela on the proper care for horses, according to the release.

Deputies continued to check on the horses through the end of the year, and said they showed improvement, according to the release.

But a deputy visited the home on Jan. 31 and found the horses in worse condition and alerted detectives in the Animal Crimes Division.

On Tuesday, deputies found three horses with dental issues, including curling teeth that would not allow them to eat, and other medical issues, according to the release.

Jason Valenzuela was also booked into the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail on seven counts of animal cruelty.

Once the horses are medically cleared, they will be cared for by inmates from Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Tent City, according to the release, which added that Arpaio has five horses, 29 dogs, and 27 cats that are adoptable and being taken care of by inmates.

For adoption information, call 602-876-1212.
