ECLECTIC, AL (WSFA) -

The city of Eclectic is in a state of confusion after the mayor resigned unexpectedly.

Michael Holton resigned after only a year in office, leaving the city in a state of shock and disappointment.

Holton informed the town council Monday night, and then told Eclectic employees Tuesday morning. The resignation was effective as of 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The official reason given was that Holton wanted to spend more time with his family.

"I guess that may have been part of the reason in that he underestimated the job it takes to run a town," said Deborah Rowe, Eclectic's town clerk. "Until you get in here and see what's involved, it can be difficult."

Gary Davenport, the Council Pro Tem President, has taken over as mayor. Davenport announced that he will serve out the remainder of Holton's term if a suitable replacement can't be found in 60 days.
