PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Several workers have been arrested at two Valley-area restaurants on charges of forgery and identity theft, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

Joaquin Venacio Cabrera, 21, was taken into custody at Red Robin at 3420 W. Chandler Blvd. in Chandler. Cabrera was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on five counts of aggravated ID theft and five counts of forgery.

His arrest stems from an investigation begun in November 2013 into the possible theft of a victim's identity.

The alleged identity theft was discovered when the victim in the case began receiving IRS notices that he had unpaid taxes, MCSO said.

The victim found that the suspect was using his information and creating additional tax liability, sheriff's investigators said. During the investigation, detectives subpoenaed the employee file for the victim and obtained a copy of the Maricopa County Food Handlers card showing the fraudulent name, MCSO said.

In a separate investigation, MCSO detectives followed a trail that led to the arrest of a 39-year-old worker at another Valley restaurant.

In November 2013, MCSO's criminal employment unit discovered a victim was being denied Social Security benefits because someone was using his identify to get a job.

During the investigation, the sheriff's detective reviewed Government and Law Enforcement databases and discovered the suspect was working at Thunder Pass Food and Spirits in Mesa.

Sheriff detectives arrested Eduardo Canella Mexicano on two counts of ID theft and two counts of forgery.

During an interview with sheriff's detectives, Mexicano admitted to being in the country illegally. Mexicano said he had been living in the U.S. for 12 years and paid human smugglers $5,000 to cross the border.

Detectives also arrested 29-year-old Isidro Hilario Carcano. Carcano was working under a false ID, sheriff's investigators said. He was charged with criminal impersonation.

"We will continue to crack down on this type of illegal activity," said MCSO Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "Expect more to come."

On Jan. 22, 2014, the owners of Uncle Sam's were taken into custody for their alleged involvement in the trafficking of stolen IDs.

On Jan. 29, a suspect was arrested at a Chili's restaurant in Mesa and two suspects were arrested at Arizona Shower Door on charges involving identity theft.

Red Robin is a national gourmet burger chain. According to its website, Thunder Pass Food & Spirit was voted Best Country-Western Bar in 2008 by the Phoenix New Times.
