MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The annual Give from the Heart blood drive is today, February 7. It's a partnership with WSFA 12 News and Lifesouth that's been going strong for nine years.

Montgomery resident Rodger Ribelin says a blood transfusion saved his life during his triple bypass. He says he never thought he'd have a need for blood.

"Unless I was in a car accident or something, I never would have dreamed of heart problems either but it's just one of those things it just happens and you never have a choice," Ribelin said.

He says donors do have a choice, and they should choose to give life to someone else.

Lifesouth officials say the Give from the Heart blood drive has saved more than 2,500 lives since it first started. All blood types are needed especially universal type O negative blood.

The drive is from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lifesouth location on Carmichael Road. Donors will have the chance to enter to win a Playstation 4, dinner for two, diamond bracelet and other prizes just in time for Valentine's Day.

You must have a valid ID, be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds.
