"When I Grow Up" forums offer supportive outlet for Columbus area girls

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Over 30 young women showed up last night, Feb. 6, for a girls-only forum called "When I Grow Up."

These monthly talk sessions are designed to help girls between ages nine and 14-year-olds cope with difficult issues they're facing.

In last night's session, Columbus-area disc jockey Divine Martino talked with the young ladies about using social media safely, among other topics.

The forum's organizer, Kristen King, says she believes young girls open up more in environments outside the home.

"Some of them feel like they don't have an outlet," says King. "They feel like their parents don't understand them. Maybe they don't want to talk to their parents. Sometimes it takes people like myself or the different speakers I have come in. They feel like they can relate to them."

The "When I Grow Up" forums take place on the first Thursday of each month at the Gallery at Fountain Park located on Macon Rd. in Columbus.

An unwelcome visitor was cause for some tense moments and quick action in the King household Saturday morning. Krystal King says it was about 7 a.m. when Stephen, her oldest son, came into his parents' room to notify them about the "big snake in the bathroom."
